Nurture creativity to improve your mental health

The world has changed a lot and now more than ever we need to take care of our mental health. Everyday life is full of stress and emotional discomfort and we all need a little calm in the chaos. And one of the best coping mechanisms is creativity.

Art and specifically process art is about nurturing creativity. Making art is a process and not an end result and the process of making and creating is where you reap all the benefits. As busy adults we have endless to-do lists and very limited time for ourselves especially when it comes to taking care of our mental health.

Unused creativity is not benign.

It metastasizes. It turns into grief, rage, judgement, sorrow, shame

-Brene Brown

So why is nurturing creativity so important?

Creativity is an incredible mood booster and it allows your weary brain to pause and reset, which will re-energize your mental capacity.

Benefits of creativity for adults:

  • Reduces stress
  • Improves your sleep and reduce fatigue
  • Boosts brain function and improves focus
  • Elevates your mood and increase feelings of happiness and contentment
  • Boosts your self-esteem
  • Reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety
  • Helps your brain problem solve better

Mindful Colouring

With colouring you don’t need any fancy tools, a degree in art or a stocked-up craft room. You just need to pick up a set of colouring pencils, print out the printables provided and get colouring. Colouring has the ability to relax the fear center of the brain and create a quietness similar to meditation which allows the brain to rest after a stressful day.

We all know how to colour, we did it when we were kids, during the colouring class I teach you a few mindful colouring techniques that will enable you to rest and reset a restless mind so that your colouring session is beneficial and stress relieving.

Abstract Watercolour

Painting with watercolours is a great way to relax and de-stress. Painting can be very calming and therapeutic, making it the perfect activity to do when you’re feeling overwhelmed or stressed out.

Watercolour paint is very simple to set up and clean-up, has a quick drying time and works well with other art mediums making it very versatile.

During the Abstract Watercolour class, you will be introduced to process-art. Learn how to slow down and enjoy the flowing nature of the medium. Abstract Watercolour will help you develop your creativity and improve your self-confidence.

Art Journaling

An art journal is the same as a written journal except that it incorporates colour, images and patterns. Some art journals contain lots of writing while others focus more on images and colour.

Art Journaling is about exploring art materials and techniques and enjoying the process of creating without worrying about the final product.

During the art journal class, you will learn how to experiment with different art mediums and explore various art techniques. Art Journaling is a great way to reduce stress and encourage creativity.
